Managing conflict in a distributed (i.e., remote) organization

In our remote work leadership certification course, we teach effective methods for managing the performance of remote employees and dealing with conflict between distributed team members. Problems related to communication and productivity will always exist, however, they can be mitigated with appropriate training.

A couple weeks ago, the CEO of Better.org violated nearly every best practice in human resource management when he decided to fire about 900 employees over a Zoom call. What can you learn from this blunder? When letting a remote employee go, this should happen in-person or 1-on-1 at the very least. In addition, the CEO in this example was not prepared, showed little to no empathy, exercised poor timing, and was seemingly without reason. You can watch the Zoom call here.

Happy Holidays
