Partner of the Month: Dustin Heaton

Our partner of the month is Dustin Heaton. Dustin is a Choose to Work Employment Specialist for the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation, based in Price and serving Eastern Utah. He has been in this position since August 2020. He also has experience in employment staffing and as a business owner. He went through our remote work professional certification course in January 2021 so that he could prepare his clients for the program. He has since become a vocal advocate for the ROI program and is one of its biggest cheerleaders. He has worked with several clients in Eastern Utah who have years of experience in jobs that have either been eliminated or that they can’t perform anymore due to a disability. He has been able to assist them in preparing for and obtaining remote jobs, which has allowed them to stay in their rural communities. He has been a big supporter in the ROI jobs spotlight and professional development series.

Student of the Month: Kathy Miller

I am on my way to starting a new life with new adventures. When I started looking into applying for remote jobs, I quickly realized that my flip phone and I were seriously old news. I did not have the skills to even apply for potential positions, until I found USU Extension's Rural Online Initiative program through my local community college. My program coordinator, Trenton Willson, suggested that I spend a month before taking the course acquiring basic computer skills via YouTube. I spent many hours watching videos on an iPad with my laptop beside it…and it worked great for hands on learning! When I was accepted to the remote work professional course, I was a bit nervous. I wasn't sure I'd have the ability to take the class, but I went straight for the program’s help desk! The ROI staff were so patient and supportive with me. Currently, I'm finding the course to be quite simple to navigate on Canvas. It is full of such amazing information and it is building my confidence and skills to apply for a remote job. Who knows, maybe one day I'll become a digital nomad as a freelance writer by a bubbling creek.

Tweet of the Week

Face time with colleagues dominates the benefits of being in the office.

There is little perceived value coming to work to:
A) Be on a computer all day.
B) Have face time with your manager

For a return to office to be a success, colleagues need to come in together to be together.

Doing this makes it clear that people mostly come into work to be in person with colleagues and co-workers.

This is why coordination on in-office and remote days is key for hybrid.
